    New evidence in violence against demonstrators

    At 4.50mins in to this clip an officer is clearly seen smacking a protestor across the head with his shield. At 7.49mins in an officer punches a protestor in the face.

    GRAPHIC new video evidence showing a policeman hitting a protester with a shield during the G20 demonstrations in London is being released by The Sunday Times today.

    Lawyers have included this and another film of a policeman punching a man as part of a dossier alleging 10 serious assaults. It will be passed to MPs.

    Footage filmed at the Climate Camp protest on April 1 shows an officer in riot gear punching a man hard in the face as a crowd retreats from a police line.

    A second video shows Alex Kinnane, 24, an IT technician from London, being hit on the back of the head with a shield by an officer in riot gear. In both cases the victims appear to pose no threat to the officer.

    The evidence has emerged after a second postmortem examination on the body of Ian Tomlinson, 47, found he died of abdominal bleeding rather than a heart attack after being hit by a police officer.

        Another US firm nabs Crossrail contract

        Jacobs Engineering's appointment as project representative follows wins by Bechtel and Transcend

        A third American firm has won a role on the £15.9bn Crossrail scheme.

        Jacobs Engineering was confirmed as project representative today, just weeks after Bechtel landed the £400m Crossrail delivery partner role.

        Jacobs Engineering's UK arm has been brought on board to make sure the project is delivered on time and to budget. The firm, which will also be responsible for making sure the project is delivered to the agreed standard, is the third US company to win work on the scheme after Bechtel was appointed at the start of the month and Transcend, a joint venture between Aecom, CH2M Hill and Nichols Group, began work as the project's programme partner in March.

        Andrew Adonis, the transport minister, said: "Jacobs will bring a wealth of experience and expertise and will help us ensure that Crossrail is delivered on time and within budget.”

        Matt, given the article states it would be the UK arm of Jacobs, I suspect that it would be a company based in the UK and employing (for the most part) British workers. Besides, one would also assume it was a competitive tender process and the project would get just as much stick if the costs spiralled upwards and over budget with the contracts being awarded to more expensive but wholly British firms.

        It is interesting that the government has encouraged the development of small and medium sized architectural and engineering firms in the UK who form the back-bone of government tax revenues in this sector, yet decide to award mega projects to overseas firms. he government has chosen to ignore the wealth of British ingenuity, skill and creative thinking for American bureaucracy and mediocrity.

        Gordon Brown, this government and now 'Lord' Adonis have already sold Britain and British (that is, English) assets down the drain, so this most recent give-away to the Americans is just a continuation of the same theme. I'm sorry to say that Gordon Brown is Scottish and anything pro-English (including jobs, construction jcontracts, etc) are seen as easy pickings. It would have surprised me if he had given the work to a British company.

        Given the feelings expressed above, perhaps Building should start campaigning to SCRAP Crossrail and push for the East London crossing and the extension of the DLR eastwards. Both of these would be far more beneficial to London's economy!

        What a load of tosh. These ARE British jobs. British engineers, British consultants, British builders. They just happen to work for American companies.

        In the same way as British workers who work for American banks, British workers who work for French power companies or British workers who work for German water providers. They work in the UK, they receive salaries in the UK and spend their hard earned quid in the UK.

        Crossrail is fantastic for the UK economy. It needs the best people and if they happen to be working for American companies who cares.

        It will generate 14,000 jobs in the UK. What other project is doing so much for UK plc? Then there is the spin off for the local economies, businesses and communities across the whole route. From Whitechapel and Woolwich to Maidenhead and Paddington. £36 billion added to the economy. That's the British economy.

        Crossrail will revolutionise transport in the South East. Stop whingeing and start supporting it. Its happening people and thank god for that!

        I can understand all of your concerns, but I'm an American working for one of the three companies in this article, and we've already been told internally by our company that very few of us (Americans) will be staffed on Crossrail. Besides that, my company has been incorporated in the UK since the 1950s and have several major offices there. It's very much a part of Britain.

          Crossrail hole Bill threatens more than East End of London-democracy too

          The threat posed to the East End of London by the UK House of Commons draft piece of legislation, the CROSSRAIL Bill, goes beyond the planned destruction of entire communities and neighbourhoods. It also includes the destruction of what remains of local democracy, and the electors say on what is done in their name by their own ‘locally elected council’. The Khoodeelaar! Campaign has just finalised the first comprehensive report on the role of those councillors who have held key posts in Tower Hamlets Council. They have acted as touts and as agents for Crossrail hole plan. Just as nominations for council elections begin to be finalised for the scheduled May 4 local elections, the findings of the Khoodeelaar! Investigation into Tower Hamlets Council make fascinating reading for all concerned with the defence of democracy in Britain.

          How Tower Hamlets Council controlling clique has been lying to the community, to “the Secretary of State” to the ‘mainstream’ media, to the local press in East London and via the “ethnic language” press and via the “ethnicity”-linked satellite TV outlets

          This is the first time that Khoodeelaar! is publishing the chapter and verse exposition of the PETITION lies that the controlling clique – ‘the leadership’ – of the present Tower Hamlets Council has been telling about its so-called recognition of what the community wants – No Crossrail hole.



          As the Crossrail hole Bill itself is a quite complicated piece of technical and conceptual contradictions so are the majority of the ‘formally submitted’ petitions about the contents of the Crossrail Bill.



          And the formally couched petition ‘against’ the “Crossrail Bill” as submitted by the controlling clique on Tower Hamlets council in September 2005 is no exception.



          Which means that there are words, phrases in it that would not occur in ordinary discourse or communications or statements.



          But that is a very common feature present in almost every single one of the 364 other petitions that have been also submitted ‘against’ the Crossrail Bill to the UK Parliament by various other persons, interests and parties concerned.



          What is unique about the ‘hole petition’ as submitted in the name of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets Council is that it is riddled with the type of lies that we have shown Michael Keith has been capable of telling about the Crossrail hole plan and about his role in peddling and touting for the Crossrail hole plan at least since June 2003.



          For those who have not examined the banality of the Michael Keith ‘speech-making’ in this context or have not had access to the results of the independent Khoodeelaar! dissection of Michael Keith’s very bizarre and very irrational ‘language’ , we are starting the comprehensive analysis of his role and of the contents of that Crossrail hole petition here.



          It is Michael Keith who has played a key [NOT the only key] role as a strategically placed tout on Tower Hamlets Council for the Crossrail hole plan assault on the people of the London borough of Tower Hamlets.



          If there has been any other ‘single’ councillor who has aided or abetted him in this way then that can only be the council leader Helal Uddin Abbas who was in the post of leader until his overthrow in May 2005.



          Between the two of them, Helal Uddin Abbas and Michael Keith have participated in the promotion of the Crossrail hole plan in the local community in the East End of London in a most intriguingly brazen and irrational way.



          They were told by Khoodeelaar! very clearly in early 2004 that what they had done up to then must stop and must not be repeated at all.



          They were written to first by CBRUK – the Committee for Bangladeshis’ Rights in the UK [which supports Khoodeelaar!] and asked to explain what they had done in promoting Crossrail up to that time [January-March 2004]. They failed to explain any of their conduct.



          The CBRUK questionnaires and constitutional communications were soon followed up by Khoodeelaar!



          Then it was noted that Helal Uddin Abbas had been a so-signatory to what must have been a Ken Livingstone confection for Crossrail that also appeared in the print editions of the London EVENING STANDARD.



          CBRUK immediately identified the source and asked Christine Gilbert, as the chief Officer of the Tower Hamlets Council, to explain why that signature had been added to the Crossrail hole plan promotion letter.



          Christine Gilbert was also asked an additional 20 questions by March 2004 about her legal role in advising the councillors on what they should or not have said and done in promoting the Crossrail assault plan against the Eats End of London community,
