Is Seb Coe threatening to visit Bangladesh next and intimidate the ‘kids’ in that country with a London 2012 Games Hosting legacy of diversion, waste and sleaze?

Ex-defence secretary John Hutton admits he said Gordon Brown would be 'f***ing disaster' as prime minister

John Hutton has outed himself as the minister who famously declared Gordon Brown would be 'a f***ing disaster' as prime minister.

The former defence secretary owned up to telling BBC political editor Nick Robinson that he would do 'everything in my power' to stop him taking over from Tony Blair.

He made his indiscreet comments on 7 September 2006, after Brownites forced Mr Blair to say he would step down as Labour leader within the year. Mr Blair finally left office in June 2007.

Not a disaster after all: Mr Hutton, right, has changed his opinion of Mr Brown, left

It had been an open secret in Westminster that the normally-mild mannered former Cabinet minister had made the explosive comments.

But Mr Hutton only admitted today that he was the culprit, during an interview on BBC Radio 4's PM programme.

And he claimed he had changed his opinion of the prime minister, saying he believes he puts his 'heart and soul' into his job.

September 2006 was a moment of high drama after Brownites came out into the open and demanded Mr Blair announce when he would step down.

Mr Brown, who was then Chancellor, attracted criticisms from Blairites after he was pictured with a huge smile on his face in Downing Street after a tumultuous meeting with the prime minister.

Later that day, Mr Blair was forced to make a statement to say the next Labour conference would be his last as leader.

That evening, Mr Robinson reported on the BBC that one senior Blairite minister had told him: 'It would be an absolute f***ing disaster if Gordon Brown was PM, and I'll do anything in my power to f***ing stop him.'

There were rumours that Blair's supporters were organising a candidate of their own, perhaps Alan Johnson.

However, Mr Hutton stayed in the Cabinet when Mr Brown took over. He stepped down on 5 June this year, the day after the shock resignation of James Purnell, who branded the prime minister an electoral liability.

Today Mr Hutton was challenged on the quote and, after attempting to dodge the question, he eventually admitted: 'I did say it. Yes I did. Yeah. Let's just get that over with.'

But although he accepted that 'I wasn't one of the prime minister's cheerleaders', he claimed his view of Mr Brown had changed as he settled into his role.

'Gordon has not been a disaster as prime minister. He has put his heart and soul into the job, and he is doing everything he can for the country at a time of difficulty.'

Later in the interview, he said: 'My opinion has changed of Gordon. I think he has - and certainly in all of his dealings with me - showed nothing but a great deal of support and help during my time as minister.

'So I personally have no criticisms of Gordon's performance as prime minister at all. I think he has been a tremendously hard-working man, who has really put his heart and soul into it.'

Mr Hutton, who will be standing down as Barrow in Furness MP at the next election, said his criticism of Mr Brown had come at a 'time of high emotion'.

He explained: 'There was a lot of manoeuvring against Tony Blair that I didn't like, which I thought reflected very badly on those who were involved.'

Asked if one of those people had been Mr Brown, Mr Hutton replied: 'Yes, I think so. I don't really think that was a period of our history as a party that any of us should look back with any sort of pride about, it was a very low point for us.'

CLIMATE OF DEMOCRACY MUST COME BEFORE CACOPHANY ON CLIMATE CHANGE.

      By © Muhammad Haque.

One of the evidential things that provides a clue as to WHY public ‘services’ are not delivered is to be found in the FACTS of what the ‘democratic institutions’ actually do. If there were true democratic accountability via the local Councils then the degree of chaos, panic and frustration which resurfaced during Monday [21 December 2009] across the South East of England following the snow would be far less and the economic, environmental losses would be significantly less. That is why democracy is more valuable than the City of London or any such ‘world class’ entity can ever be. What then is the reason WHY the local councils are not doing their job? What keeps the councils lagging behind? LAGGING BEHIND THEIR MAIN DUTIES! These questions could be put with equal relevance about other ‘elected’ bodies, typified most prominently by the palace of Ghostsminster.
