Crossrail expects to manage around 600 truck-loads per day in its mammoth project to build a rail link between East and West London. Simon Phillips, construction logistics manager at Crossrail, says the company plans to centrally manage the transportation of materials by road, rail and waterway. Crossrail, which is backed by funding of nearly £16bn, predicts that 47% of journeys to and from the construction sites will be by road, 39% by barge, and 14% by rail.
Commentators have already voiced concern about congestion resulting from Crossrail work. Lord Berkeley has called for Crossrail to reopen disused Royal Mail tunnels under London to shift spoil from the project and avert traffic chaos in the capital, according to Roadtransport.com sister title Contract Journal.
As part of the Crossrail plan, about 21km of twin-bore tunnel will be built below London, and thousands of tonnes of excavated material a month is expected to be transported away from the construction areas. The work will include a massive redevelopment of Tottenham Court Road tube station.
Spoil from the work will be transported to Wallasea Island in Essex as part of an RSPB scheme that will turn 620 hectares of land into coastal marshland habitat for birds and other marine life.
Phillips says strict controls will be put in place to manage the number of trucks travelling through central London, and new consolidation centres and logistics facilities will be set up for deliveries. "Our aim is to minimise waste and maximise recycling. We don't want to see any empty lorries."

In the context of the KHOODEELAAR! campaign against Big Business scam CROSSRAIL, we have pointed out, with contemporary evidence each time, how the ‘institutions’ and ‘agencies’ that had been erected after CENTURIES of battle against neglect and denial, were being smashed, destroyed under Gordon Brown’s ‘Government’ because the funds and resources needed to make them accessible and available to the people were being taken away or withheld .. that the £Billions of public money being diverted into Big Business scams like Crossrail would and should have been applied to the vital services that are being destroyed.....That in the case of ‘London’ which as an image has been constantly distorted and used as marketing and propaganda tool for the City of London interests and their Big Business controllers and prompters.. London is suffering a startling rise in diseases associated with Victorian times, official figures reveal today.
Rare infectious illnesses including typhoid, whooping cough and scarlet fever have soared by 166 per cent in the past two years, with the number of cases of mumps - a disease easily prevented with vaccine - rising from 125 in 2007 to 393 last year - an increase of 214 per cent.
Justine Greening, the shadow minister for London, said infection rates in the capital are markedly higher than the national averages.

The rise could be a result of parents refusing the MMR jab after now-debunked claims in 2001 that it might be linked to autism.
Mumps can lead to hearing loss and damage the nervous system in adults.
The figures also showed cases of the highly-contagious whooping cough have quadrupled in the five years to 2007, from 63 to 252.
Symptoms include choking spells and vomiting and can cause death, especially in young infants.
Meanwhile cases of scarlet fever, which causes high fevers, rashes, and severe damage to internal organs, are up 153 per cent since 2005, with 501 infected in London last year.
Typhoid, which is associated with poor sanitation and hygiene, has risen steadily since 2004, from 45 to 127 cases per year.
The Conservatives claimed the Government was partly to blame for failing to invest enough in public health and to appoint school nurses.
Ms Greening, MP for Putney, said: 'The rise of these highly infectious and potentially fatal diseases in our city is truly alarming.
'The Government must do more to ensure the public health of Londoners.'

They say mumps is rising because people are not getting vaccinated... but I'm at university and one of my friends and 2 people he shares with have all caught it despite being vaccinated and another friend of mine at another university has also developed a bad case of it despite again having being vaccinated. Apparently it is rare for immunisations for mumps not to work but this is clearly not the case when 4 people I know all develop this within the space of a month.
That has to be million to one odds surely?

I don't think this has much to do with the Government and more to do with the fact that people aren't immunizing their children.
I wonder who will complain the loudest should their children get sick with any of these 'preventable' diseases?
It's always going to be someone else's fault. Such a shame.
