Londoners will pay £400 million in interest payments on Transport for London debt by 2018, it emerged today.
TfL has borrowed unprecedented amounts for the East London Line, Docklands Light Railway extension and Crossrail. Its total outstanding debt could be £8.3 billion by 2018.
There are fears that the funding gap combined with possible spending cuts after the election could send fares soaring.
Green Assembly member Jenny Jones said: “This is the first time London is paying for its own transport infrastructure investment.
"This shifts the political balance, as any cutback in government grant will leave a future London Mayor struggling to pay back huge amounts of money through increases to the fares.
“The big crisis could come in 2030 when debt levels could rise to over £700 million a year, just when we will need to renew the Tube and rail network again.”
A spokesman for Transport for London said: “There has been no suggestion from the Government of their failing to honour their settlement with us.”

Great! So they want us to use public transport more and use our cars less, yet we're getting charged more and more every year. No wonder people drive instead!

- Tori, London
Lower emission is always advertised and always telling people to drive less everyday, and use public transport more often. but how can we afford to use public transport more often if it cost us more?

- Kay, London
Am I glad for using my motorcyle to get around London.

- Joe, Swanley Kent
Put the fares up again and I will sit on by backside at home on the dole.Average daily time two and from work 3.5hrs,time at work 12 hours.Pathetic service, pathetically overpriced.

- Dave, london
Cost of travel to and inside London is grossly overcharged, and always has been. However it has got worse as increases outstrip inflation every year.

From Chelmsford in costs just over £4000 net, to get to London. To cover that you have got to earn just over
£5000 pa (or £2.75 per hour). The contradiciton is that to travel to Colchester, which equidistant, but in the other direction costs less that £2000.

When asked why the difference in cost per mile, a representative for the Rail company just said " we are trying to discourage people from travelling at rush hour". Well, until we break out of the 08:30 to 18:00 start and finnish times for employees, that will never change.

As for working locally, Chelsmford is now a commuter town with even half our High Street Retailers closed and shops vacant possession. And yet the town has grown to 100 000 population; so captive market with nowhere to run or alternative.

Geoff is having a laugh. The waffling scarecrow and his boy wonder transport adviser are the biggest disaster for Londons Transport there could be.

- Colin, barking essex
And yet we have the highest fares in Europe/the World. Where does all the money go ?

- Grim Reaper, Hell
And yet Boris still plans to cut the Western Congestion charge - despite all the revenue it generates?

- Alex Lewis, London
Bankrupt Country..Bankrupt London...doesnt anybody anymore understand the meaning of the word ' BUDGET'...you spend what you have and not what you do not have that has been the problem with Government for the last 100 years. An example. after WW2 why was a seperate account not set up called ' Pensions' then all money paid in and pensions paid out, the goal to have so much money in the pot that Pensions would be met from Interest acrued. Now apply this principle across the board and understand why and how we have been robbed and enslaved by Governments who are the new Royalty of our age.

- Clif, London
If you hadn't noticed TfL are in serous debt(that is the GLA) and the grossly incompetent communist influenced Labour Government has produced the largest national debt ever and who do you think will pay for it all? You got it right first time - you will via your Council Tax!

The pathetic Alistair Darling's debt cutting exercise will just be transferred to your local Council and YOU will pay significantly increased Council Tax as a result. You don't believe me? All you have to do is wait for the little letter from your council to fall on the mat next year and then come back and tell me I was wrong.

- James, Bromley, Kent
The East London line project, DLR extensions and Crossrail were all approved by the previous toxic spending-addicted Mayor who has now plunged this city's transport body into the worst financial crisis ever. Thankfully we now have Boris who will get us out of this mess, which should be by cutting all funding to pie in the sky projects under the previous administration and sacking all TfL staff who go on strike.

- Geoff, London
This is why they're allowing everyone to register as minicab drivers. Nice up front payment to register for TFL, and congestion charge free driving for members of the public. Everyone's a winner.

- Ted, London

Khoodeelaar! Told you so! That the office of ‘mayor’ at the expense of the people of LONDON was an abusive office. That it had been contrived by Tony Bliar who had no respect for democracy. That the post of “mayor at the expense of the people of LONDON” has been persistently mis-used and abused. Most spectacularly in their [successive post-holders’] peddling and in their touting for the MIC big biz agenda scam Crossrail. Now comes confirmation of yet another instance, albeit only confined to a single location in LONDON [in this news item] of Boris Johnson abusing the position and abusing the locally elected councils. This illustrates the dangers of giving too much powers to a single holder of political office. The case for scrapping the office of LONDON mayor is made again. [To be continued]

London mayor Boris Johnson has approved plans for a large mixed-use scheme on the site of the former Southall Gas Works in west London, overturning the decision of two local authorities to throw out the proposals.
Johnson approved the Southall town centre plans, which are intended to build up to 3,750 new homes, of which 30 per cent will be affordable, at a public hearing at City Hall last night.

In January, Johnson chose to call in the scheme following a decision at the end of last year by Ealing and Hillingdon councils, whose boundaries the development will cross, to refuse the application by site owner National Grid on the grounds of increased traffic congestion and threats to local ecology.

But as a condition for giving the scheme the green light, Johnson has said that only 2,500 units can be built before South Road bridge, which is near the development site, is widened by the developer to ease congestion.

He said: "West London is an important driver for the capital’s entire economy and within a decade it will become one of the best-connected regions in the UK with the arrival of (London’s east-west network) Crossrail. Failure to give the Southall application the go-ahead and develop this key Brownfield site could be detrimental to the future economic prosperity of the area."

A legal agreement attached to the application will see the developer contribute more than £22 million towards the transport infrastructure improvements, education and health facilities and improvements to the public realm, the Greater London Authority said.

KHOODEELAAR! Noting UK CRASS role player cabinet minister at the expense of Transport, Andrew Adonis, has exposed his banal grasp of his 'Cabinet Ministerial' role by expressing an utterance of 'welcome' to the London High Court ruling that his [Adonis] Department for Transport' has acted in a crass, shoddy way in its Big Business-set zeal to rush off to build a Third Runway at Heathrow…How could Adonis be even treated as being in control of his faculties after this toe-curling display? How can anything he states after this be treated as being ordinary, decent and honest?
