£16bn crossrail go-ahead welcomed
Politicians, big business and train companies hailed the go-ahead for a long-awaited £16 billion rail scheme.
A Bill for the west-east, cross-London Crossrail scheme - originally scrapped on cost grounds in the 1990s - received Royal Assent on Tuesday night after a three-year passage through Parliament.
This means work can begin on a line which will run from as far west of London as Maidenhead in Berkshire to as far east as Shenfield in Essex. The line will bring faster journey times for those passing through London and is expected to provide a £20 billion boost to the UK economy.
