Transport Secretary away on holiday as cold snap causes travel chaos

The Transport Secretary has rejected demands that he cut short his skiing holiday and personally take charge of efforts to remedy the disruptions to Britain’s roads, railways and airports.
Lord Adonis flew to a resort in Austria at the end of last week just ahead of one of the busiest periods for the transport system. That decision was subjected to fierce criticism after the cold snap resulted in widespread chaos, particularly on the Eurostar train service.
Labour’s embarrassment over the absence of the Transport Secretary as tens of thousands of travellers struggled in freezing temperatures intensified yesterday when it emerged that his Conservative Shadow, Theresa Villiers, had spent the day being briefed by Department of Transport officials. Ms Villiers had been taking part in scheduled talks about a transition to a Conservative government.
Bob Neill, the Shadow Local Government Minister, said: “Britain has come to a standstill this week as snow has brought chaos to our communities. I hardly think it is appropriate that the Secretary of State is on holiday at a time when his department needs him most. It speaks volumes about Lord Adonis’s priorities that he’s more interested in the ski slopes of Austria than the snow drifts and ice-coated roads of England.”
However, a source close to Lord Adonis made clear that he had no intention of abandoning his family holiday. “The man’s a workaholic. Surely he’s allowed a short family break?”
A spokeswoman claimed that the Transport Secretary had kept in regular contact with his office and Sadiq Khan, the duty minister in charge. “He’s been in telephone contact with his office and with Eurostar as well as with other transport companies.”
The peer is the second Cabinet minister to have been criticised for taking a foreign holiday this winter. Ben Bradshaw, the Culture Secretary, flew to Sri Lanka two days after David Miliband, the Foreign Secretary, raised “serious concerns” about its human rights record.
Generally, however, leading politicians are staying in the UK. Gordon Brown will spend Christmas Day in his constituency home in North Queensferry, Fife, while David Cameron is expected to visit the Oxfordshire home of his mother-in-law.

It may be truly said that none treat the people with more arrogant distain than Labour-appointed peers. Bring back the hereditary peers, for at least *they* recognized their duty and responsibility to the people of Great Britain!

Seriously, what do you expect the man to do? Drive a gritter? Beckon the sun?! We are all entitled to holidays but it only seems to be public service positions where you are expected to work during your leave. The same people that say he should cancel his holiday will probably also argue that Britain has the worst working hours in Europe. Get a grip!

In that case, Lord Adonis had better start worrying about getting re-elected at the general election.
