Sources say that five groups are vying to couple up to a crucial deal on the £16bn Crossrail project in London.
The prize is the project management deal, valued at between £300m and £400m. Understood to be pitching for the scheme are US giants Bechtel and CH2M Hill, along with Mace, Laing O'Rourke and Balfour Beatty Management.
Cross London Rail Links is expected to reveal the final line-up for the delivery partner contest tomorrow, but already many industry insiders are putting their money on Bechtel to scoop the deal.
Bechtel project-managed the Jubilee Line extension for London Underground and played a key role in the tortuous process of guiding the Crossrail project through Parliament.

Other pundits say that Laing O'Rourke, Mace and CH2M Hill could also be in with a shout, thanks to their involvement in overseeing construction work on the London 2012 Olympic venues.
It is expected that the winning project manager will emerge at the end of the year, after which it will select contractors to undertake key construction contracts on the proposed rail link between Heathrow and Essex.
