Boris has been criticised for propsing a business tax hike to fund Crossrail

BUSINESS leaders have blasted a tax hike that expects them to fork out to pay for Crossrail.

London Mayor Boris Johnson last week announced a two per cent rise for a fifth of the capital's businesses.

He says the levy, which applies to firms with a rateable value of £50,000 or more, is essential if the £16 billion cross-city train is to arrive by 2017.

But the British Retail Consortium predicted "considerable opposition" to the plan and said its members would enjoy little direct benefit.

Stephen Robertson, BRC director general, said: "Crossrail is a much needed and long overdue project, but London retailers will pay out far more than they can ever hope to get back.

"Requiring retailers to disproportionately fund Crossrail is wrong at any time, but is especially ill-timed given the current tough trading conditions - especially for non-food retailers."

The tax rise comes into force from 2017 and the BRC says retailers will keep paying until 2036.

Crossrail will connect west and east London with fast and direct services between key locations such as Liverpool Street, Bond Street and Heathrow.

Building work has already started in Canary Wharf on a line that will eventually carry more than 200 million passengers in its first year.

Mayor Johnson said figures like those showed how critical Crossrail - and the £4.1 billion his tax is expected to bring in - will be to the capital.

"Despite the economic climate it is essential that we do not allow our investment in the future to falter.

"We need to take a long view and move ahead with projects that will ensure that we emerge from the downturn in the best possible shape.
